While perhaps mistaken for a indie album cover photoshoot, these images were captured by Rachel J Morley during the fourth Anthropic Rock Recovery Tour on a recent project development in Geelong. Together we navigated Geelong’s CBD, talking about concrete, rocks, dampness, moss, pigeons and spiritual convenience.&nbsp; --- UNSPACES: Anthropic [Concrete] Rocks tests a new way of navigating public space, redirecting attention to interstitial and quietly present remnants of development, maintenance and urban degradation. Through collection, interaction and intervention, the concrete [anthropic] rock is understood as a cultural artefact of the anthropocene. Shaped by the systems and behaviours performed by the public, concrete rocks transmute from waste matter to socio-cultural objects of interest.Through a shared activity of seeking and collecting Anthropic [Concrete] Rocks in three intimate tours, the artist invites public participants to collaborate and converse in a durational workshop format. Encouraging active engagement with typically *invisible* urban spaces and questions of value, the project becomes a shared act of resistance through public maintenance, care and exchange. Collected Anthropic [concrete] Rocks from the Geelong Tours will be installed at Platform Arts and as temporary interventions around Geelong CBD. Both the Gold Coast and Geelong are in a period of intense urban growth marked by increasing demolition, construction and infrastructure development. Split into an open studio and cosy living space, the month-long residency was a time of self-directed experimentation, rest, introspection and slowness. Possible because of the Bellmaine French Appreciation Travelling Scholarship, La Tempera held me at a time of intense creative and personal vulnerability providing gentle space for new ideas and ambitions within my practice to emerge and begin to clarify. In the company of Mahee Auffret (FR) and Gaurav Ogale (IND), I fell into a gentle routine of walking, making, sleeping, walking, eating, wandering, writing, walking, dreaming, touching, thinking and sitting. The Country held me differently; it smelt of changed seasons, mossy dampness, early mornings, instant coffee, dry stone, colza and wood smoke. Solitude, not loneliness. I went to the local markets and drank mulled red wine with the local climate group; shopped at La Resourcerie; walked the tiny streets and visited the bookshops; drank classique French espresso at the local pub; played Amigo and lost and walked the forest night and day. Thank you to Isabel, Florian, Mage, Mahee and Gaurav for being so generous with their company, conversation and time. Oxenford’s interdisciplinary practice is not so much about the Gold Coast as of it. The emerging artist, curator and public art facilitator is guided by the potential of the city’s public spaces; as both a source material for her ephemeral installations, as well as sites for exchange and interaction. Through daily ritual of walking, looking and finding, Oxenford explores how such spaces are constructed and how they inform the ways in which we navigate urban environments. The layered urban landscape of the Gold Coast has proven fertile ground for Oxenford, who relocated to the city from Toowoomba in 2019. Rather than the buildings themselves however, the artist is interested in the interstitial zones between buildings, and what they can reveal about a place and its inhabitants. For the City of Gold Coast’s LENS GC program in 2019, Oxenford was paired wit multi-disciplinary artist Jay Jermyn and musician Julian Currie of VEOPLE. Over a two-week period, the trio embarked on a walking tour around the back streets of Tugun and Currumbin, filming short sequences using objects found along the way. In Mirror, a bathroom vanity sits in a backyard, its plastic wrap blowing it the wind against a stack of tyres. Jermyn and Currie sampled the plastic blowing the wind and combined it with a dreamy guitar and synth soundscape. The short video is a portrait of sorts, singling out the discarded object (in an unlikely context) for attention. Between June and August of 2021, Oxenford undertook a residency at THE WALLS Art Space to develop a site-responsive body of work, repurposing items from the gallery’s store room, as well as objects collected on the artist’s daily walks around the streets of Miami. The assemblages produced through this process embody the artist’s core values, including site-responsiveness, humble gestures and a fidelity to materials. Through their participatory installation Institutional Waste #2 in An Alternative Economics, Make or Break invited speculation, thinking together, research, conversation, and hands-on making to dig into questions of sustainability and sustainment as we face an uncertain future. This workshop centred Institutional Waste #2 as a point of departure to explore the experimental storytelling process.&nbsp; This workshop was presented in conjunction with An Alternative Economics, an exhibition which brings together a group of Australian and international artists who each use their artmaking to explore and expand on the creation of value. Guided by the idea of the circular economy and its compelling counter-narrative to the untenable model of eternal growth, each work in this exhibition offers a provocation to make us reconsider what is ‘counted’ in our society and why. Make or Break are an artist collective working on unceded Gadigal and Bidjigal lands, they devise and experiment with process-based projects that are co-authored with communities they are invited into.
